In his comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, the Bard weaves an intricate tale of love and deception. There is the sweet, forthright love of Hero and Claudio set against Benedick and Beatrice’s sizzling battle of wits. There is Leonato’s gleeful plotting to spark a romance between Beatrice and Benedick and the cruel hoax contrived by Don John, to plant suspicion, dishonor Hero and spoil the marriage. As described by director, Jefferson Slinkard, “This play is an entertainment. It is a celebration of life and love.” In Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare’s characters summon up love, honor and faith to avert tragedy and inspire the heart.
The members of American Bard Theater Company are artists from different countries, lifestyles, and faiths pursuing their passion for theater in New York City. Adding to its uniqueness is ABTC’s use of the First Folio technique, a driving element of their mission. “For me, this is so exciting – to collaborate with people who come from a different point of view. It is the very crux of why I work in theater.” notes Erin Gilbreth, ABTC Managing Director. “As an Asian American actor, it is amazing to be given the chance to play Benedick. Diversity in casting is always important. We live in New York City the most diverse city in the United States, maybe the world; the theater should reflect the city.” adds Andrew Eisenman, a founding member. This production of Much Ado About Nothing allows American Bard Theater Company to bring their talents to serve the play and entertain the audience.
