YOU WOULDN'T EXPECT by Marilynn Barner Anselmi

This play explores the staggering truths about the coercive influence of the government sponsored eugenics program in rural North Carolina in the mid-1960s. The play’s action happens largely at the North Carolina Eugenics office where we see: the cat-and-mouse workings of the two women employed there, the applied pressure of the eugenics practice on four African-American woman, and two scenes “in the field” at a squalled shack of a pedophile father angling to get his daughter “fixed” so that he wouldn’t have to deal with the outcome of his actions; the offspring. Three of the 7 characters/roles have been cast.  We are seeking the following:

  • Nilene Cooper - African American female, mid-20's - mid-30's, mother of three, actively pursuing relationship with male partner

  • May Rivers -  African American female, mid-30's-mid-40's, mother of 9 children (some adopted), protective, bold, no nonsense

  • Ginny Rivers - African American female, must be 18 or older to play 12/13 - less developed mentally than is normal for her age.

  • Barbara Lynch - African American female, mid-30's, mother, gentle, malleable.
